Backlinks Cold-Start List

100+ free backlink sites for a new website — high-authority platforms organized by phase of the link building playbook, sorted by Semrush Authority Score, each marked by the time it takes.

These are free backlink sites — profiles, directories, site builders, review platforms, and guest post opportunities you can submit to without paying. Think of it as an off-page SEO checklist for a new domain: work the phases top to bottom and you have covered the link building basics. Every row links out and is marked by how much work it takes. Sort order is by Semrush Authority Score, highest first. The full playbook (when to submit, what to write) lives in the SEO starter kit.

Backlinks FAQ

What are the types of backlinks?
Three kinds matter here. Profile links come from your page on another site — a GitHub profile, a directory listing. Contextual links sit inside real content — a guest post, a quoted answer to a journalist. Editorial links are earned unprompted when someone cites your work. All three appear on this list, ranked by authority; contextual and editorial links carry the most weight.
Do nofollow links help SEO?
Yes, but differently. A nofollow link tells Google not to pass full endorsement, so it carries less ranking weight than a dofollow link — but it is still a real signal: it can drive traffic, get your site discovered by crawlers, and make your backlink profile look natural. A profile with only dofollow links looks manufactured. Most links on social platforms and many directories are nofollow; treat them as the floor, not the goal, and pursue contextual dofollow links as the real wins.
What is a backlink profile?
The complete set of links pointing at your site: how many there are, which domains they come from, what anchor text they use, and the ratio of dofollow to nofollow. Google reads it as a reputation record. A healthy profile grows steadily, comes from relevant sites, and mixes link types; a bad one spikes overnight, comes from unrelated sites, or repeats the same anchor text. You can see yours in Google Search Console (Links report) or any backlink tool.
How do I get backlinks for a new website?
Work the phases in order. Profiles and link-in-bio pages first — they take minutes and establish that your domain exists. Directories and site builders next. Then the slower plays: republished content, B2B reviews, and guest posts. A new website that does the first three phases in week one typically has 30–50 referring domains within a month.
Are free backlinks worth it?
Yes, at the start. Every platform on this list is free to submit to, and a link from a high-authority domain — even a profile page — is a legitimate vote. What does not work is scale without substance: 100 empty profiles and no site worth linking to. Submit to the platforms where you can add real content, not just a bare URL.
How do I index my backlinks?
Mostly, you wait — days to months. Google crawls high-authority domains constantly, so links there get discovered fast; a profile page on a quieter site can sit uncrawled for weeks. You cannot force indexing of a page you do not control. The practical move is to link to your profile pages from your own site occasionally, so a crawler following your links finds them.
