Good for / not for

  • Anyone who wants a React front end quickly and already deploys on Vercel.
  • Next.js, Tailwind and shadcn/ui projects — v0's documentation lists these among the modern tools it works with.
  • Getting reviewable code rather than a black box: a generation can be opened as a pull request.
  • Trying the idea cheaply, on $5 of monthly credits and seven messages a day.
  • Teams who want to work in the same project at once — there is no real-time editing, commenting or shared workspace.
  • Apps that are mostly backend logic; v0 generates the interface and stops there.
  • Anyone who needs a predictable cost per generation, since pricing has been token-based since February 2026.

What it actually does

You describe an interface and v0 generates it as React, on the stack Vercel maintains: its documentation says it works with modern tools like Next.js, Tailwind and shadcn/ui. You iterate in chat — change the layout, add a state, restyle the table — and when the result is right you deploy it straight to production or open it as a pull request so somebody can review the code before it merges. That pull-request path is the real difference between v0 and the builders that keep your app inside their own product: what you get is code in your repository, on a stack a React developer already knows. What v0 does not do is the other half of an app. It is frontend-first and generates React only, so anything that lives mostly in a backend belongs somewhere else. It is also single-player: no real-time editing, no commenting, no team workspace, so two people cannot work on one generation together. And since February 2026 usage has been billed in tokens rather than a fixed number of generations, so what a component costs depends on how much you iterate on it.

Three honest limitations

  1. React only, and frontend-first inside Vercel's ecosystem — an app whose weight is in the backend is the wrong shape for it.
  2. Single-player: no real-time editing, commenting or team workspace. Reviewers also report that components with complex state, API integration or live data often need substantial reworking.
  3. Pricing has been token-based since February 2026, so heavy iteration on one component burns credits at a rate the message count does not predict.

Alternatives

  • Lovable — Choose Lovable instead if you want the backend too, on Supabase, out of the same chat.
  • Bolt.new — Choose Bolt.new instead if you want a full-stack JavaScript app that builds and runs in the browser, not a front end for Vercel.
  • Base44 — Choose Base44 instead if you do not write code and want database, login and hosting without touching a repository.

Getting started in 5 minutes

  1. Open v0.app and describe one screen rather than a whole app — the free plan allows seven messages a day.
  2. Iterate on that screen until it is right; each message draws on the $5 of monthly credits.
  3. Deploy it to Vercel, or open it as a pull request if you want the code reviewed before it merges.
  4. Move to Plus ($30 per user a month) if the seven-message limit is what keeps stopping you; it adds $30 of credits per user plus $2 of free daily credits on login.

v0 by Vercel questions

Is v0 free?
There is a free plan with $5 of included monthly credits and a limit of seven messages a day. Plus is $30 per user a month, Business is $100 per user a month, and Enterprise is quoted.
What does v0 generate?
React. Vercel's documentation says it works with modern tools like Next.js, Tailwind and shadcn/ui, and the output can be deployed straight to production or opened as a pull request.
Why is my credit use unpredictable?
Since February 2026 v0 has billed in tokens rather than a fixed number of generations, so a component you iterate on heavily costs more than its message count suggests.
Can my team work in v0 together?
Not in the same generation. Plus and Business include team collaboration and centralized billing through Vercel, but there is no real-time editing, commenting or shared workspace.
v0 or Lovable?
v0 if you need a React front end and already deploy on Vercel. Lovable if you want the backend as well, on Supabase, from the same conversation.
