Build an app without code
Best AI app builders in 2026: 4 tools compared
4 tools · Updated Sep 6, 2026
"Describe an app, get a running app" is the pitch, and it is close enough to true to be worth explaining properly. You type a paragraph — a booking form, an internal dashboard, a directory with logins — and the tool writes the code, runs it and hands you a URL. What comes out, in most cases, is a React front end on a back end someone else hosts. Base44 bundles the database, authentication and hosting into one product. Lovable pairs React with Supabase. Bolt.new builds and runs a full-stack JavaScript app inside your browser tab. v0 generates a React interface and deploys it to Vercel. None of them is a generator you run once: they are chat sessions, where you describe, look, and describe the correction, and every round spends credits or tokens. Where they stop is the part the marketing skips. Reviewers of Lovable budget 20 to 40 hours of developer cleanup before a generated prototype is production-ready, and Lovable's own documentation puts responsibility for security on you. Reviewers of v0 report that components with complex state, API integrations or live data often need substantial reworking. Real authentication rules, payment handling and a data model that survives its second feature are still judgement calls. Treat the output as a fast first draft of an app, not the app.
Side by side
| Tool | Best for | Free tier | From |
|---|---|---|---|
| Base44 | Non-technical founders who want a working app without making a single configuration decision. | $0 with 25 message credits and 100 integration credits a month, and up to five apps. | from $20/month |
| Lovable | Non-technical founders and PMs who need something live quickly. | There is a free plan and it needs no credit card, but Lovable does not publish its credit allowance — the page says only "Free grants". | from $25/month |
| Bolt.new | Developers who want the shortest path from a prompt to a running app, with the code theirs to keep. | $0 with 300,000 tokens a day, under a ceiling of 1,000,000 a month. | from $25/month |
| v0 by Vercel | Anyone who wants a React front end quickly and already deploys on Vercel. | $0 with $5 of included monthly credits and a hard limit of seven messages a day. | from $30/month |
How we picked
Four criteria. Each tool has a free plan. Each produces a running, hosted app rather than a file of code. Each works in a browser with nothing installed. And each has traction suggesting it will still exist next year: Lovable at $500M ARR and a $13.3B valuation, Base44 bought by Wix for $80M and at roughly $150M ARR by mid-2026, Bolt.new from $0 to $40M ARR in about five months, and v0 from Vercel. Lovable and Bolt.new are two of the best-known names here; leaving them out would make the comparison useless. Prices come from each vendor's own pricing page, read on 6 September 2026 (v0's on 7 September). We have not tested them hands-on.
The tools
Base44
from $20/monthDescribe an app and get the interface, database, login and hosting. Free gives 25 message credits a month and up to five apps.
Lovable
from $25/monthDescribe a web app and get a React and Supabase build. Pro is $25 a month; the free plan's allowance is not published.
Bolt.new
from $25/monthPrompt a full-stack JavaScript app that builds and runs in your browser. Free gives 300,000 tokens a day, capped at 1,000,000 a month.
v0 by Vercel
from $30/monthA Vercel agent that turns a prompt into a deployed React interface. Free includes $5 of monthly credits and a 7-message-a-day limit.
Which one should you start with?
Start with Base44 if you do not write code. Its free plan is the most concretely specified of the four — 25 message credits a month and up to five apps — and the database, login and hosting come with it, so there is nothing to wire together. Start with Bolt.new instead if you write JavaScript and want the code: 300,000 free tokens a day is enough to learn whether it suits you. Come to Lovable when you want a React and Supabase app you can keep editing and can live with $25 a month once the free grants run out. Leave v0 until you are already deploying on Vercel, because that is where its output goes.
Questions people actually ask
- Can I export the code?
- From three of the four, yes. Base44 has two-way GitHub sync from the Builder plan ($50 a month), and its FAQ says you own your code, your data and your users. Bolt.new generates a normal JavaScript project and full code ownership is part of its pitch. v0 can open its output as a pull request in your repository. Lovable's pricing page does not spell this out, so check its docs before you commit to it.
- What happens when credits run out?
- You wait or you pay. Bolt.new's free plan allows 300,000 tokens a day within a 1,000,000-a-month ceiling. v0's free plan allows seven messages a day against $5 of monthly credits, and Plus adds $2 of free daily credits on login. Base44 sells top-ups mid-cycle. On Lovable, rollovers and on-demand top-ups are Pro features, so the free plan has neither.
- Are the apps really production-ready?
- Not as they come out. Reviewers of Lovable budget 20 to 40 hours of developer cleanup, and Lovable's docs put security responsibility on you. Reviewers of Bolt.new estimate up to half of your tokens go on fixing errors Bolt itself introduced. Reviewers of v0 report that anything with complex state or live data needs substantial reworking. The prototype is real; the hardening is yours.
- Which is cheapest to try?
- All four have a free plan, and Base44's is the most clearly stated: 25 message credits and 100 integration credits a month, up to five apps. On the paid tiers, Base44 Starter is $20 a month ($16 annually), Lovable Pro and Bolt.new Pro are both $25, and v0 Plus is $30 per user.
